The Turkish coast is a few kilometres across the strait, close enough that the approach is flown with Mykale mountain filling the window. Around 600,000 passengers a year use it, mostly Dutch, German, Scandinavian, British and Polish holidaymakers between May and October, plus the Athens flights that run all year.
Fraport Greece renewed the terminal in 2021: one hall, arrivals and departures together, the taxi rank and car park outside. Pythagoreio, with its harbour, tavernas and the Eupalinos tunnel, is close enough to walk to; everything else on this large, mountainous island is a drive.

Not into the airport. KTEL Samou buses between Pythagoreio and Vathy stop on the main road about 10 minutes away, several times a day in summer, about €2.
About €35 to Kokkari (30–35 minutes) and €50 to Karlovasi (about an hour) by day. Both are worth pre-booking as a transfer on changeover days.
The Kusadasi boats leave from Vathy (about €25 by taxi, 20–25 minutes) and in summer also from Pythagoreio, five minutes away. Passport control applies; check the sailing times, which are mostly morning.
In the open-air car park beside the terminal, from about €3 an hour or €10 a day, first 10 minutes free. It is rarely full.
Avis, Budget, Hertz, Sixt and Europcar have desks in the terminal, alongside Samian companies that also deliver to hotels. The cars are parked beside the terminal.
For anything beyond your resort, yes: the island is large and mountainous, the KTEL is thin and the best beaches and villages are on the west side, an hour away. Book early for July and August.
Two hours; two and a half when the Dutch and German charters leave together on summer afternoons, or for a non-Schengen (UK) flight. The hall is small, so earlier gains nothing.
