Volos Airport (VOL), officially Nea Anchialos National Airport, lies on the coast of the Pagasetic Gulf 26 km south-west of Volos, next to the Nea Anchialos air base. Its runway is one of the longest in Greece, and the small civil terminal opened in 1991. It serves Volos, the Pelion peninsula and the Thessaly plain, with summer charters and low-cost flights from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Britain, and a domestic link to Athens in the season.

Traffic is seasonal and modest, under 100,000 passengers a year, and the airport is quiet from November to April. It is also the back door to the Sporades: Volos port, half an hour away, has the ferries and hydrofoils to Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos.

Transport

Volos is 26 km away, about 30 minutes and €40 by taxi. The Pelion villages are an hour, about €65. There is no direct bus: the KTEL passes through Nea Anchialos village, 10 euros by taxi from the terminal.

Parking

A car park next to the terminal, from about €2 an hour or €8 a day. It is rarely full: most passengers arrive by coach or hire car.

Car rental

Rental firms meet the summer flights with desks at the terminal. Pelion is a mountain of villages and beaches reached on winding roads with a sparse bus, so nearly every independent visitor drives; a small car and full insurance are the right choice.

The airport is 26 km from Volos with no bus at the door. Arrange your onward transport before you land: a hire car, the tour coach, or a taxi booked for the flight time.

For Skiathos, compare a Volos flight plus ferry with flying direct: the crossing from Volos port is about two and a half hours by ferry or 90 minutes by hydrofoil.

The terminal is small with limited seating and a single café; arriving two hours before an international flight is enough, and there is little to do beyond that.

In winter check the timetable before planning around this airport: from November to April there may be no scheduled flights at all, and Thessaloniki or Athens is the alternative.
