Naxos Airport (JNX) is 3 km south of Chora, on the flat land behind the beaches of Agios Georgios and Agios Prokopios, so close to town that the aircraft cross the bay on approach. It opened in 1992 with a short runway that takes only turboprops: Olympic and Sky Express fly ATRs from Athens several times a day, all year, and there are no international or jet flights.

The terminal is one room with a baggage belt and a coffee counter. Most visitors still reach Naxos by ferry from Piraeus or Mykonos and Santorini; the flights carry islanders, families and anyone who prefers 40 minutes to six hours, and they sell out weeks ahead in August.

Transport

Chora and the port are 3 km away, about €12 by taxi; Agios Prokopios is even closer at about €10. In summer the KTEL stops at the airport road for €2. The beach at Agios Georgios is a 20-minute walk.

Parking

A small car park in front of the terminal, from about €2 an hour or €6 a day. The airport is so close to town that most people are dropped off by taxi.

Car rental

Naxos rental firms meet the flights at the terminal or deliver from Chora. Naxos is the largest Cycladic island, with mountain villages, marble quarries and a south-west coast of beaches beyond the bus line, so most visitors who stay more than a few days rent a car for at least part of the trip.

Local tips

Flights sell out early. The ATRs carry about 70 passengers and Naxos has no other airline, so book July and August seats months ahead or plan the ferry from Piraeus or Mykonos.

Small aircraft, small allowances: check the cabin bag limit on the ATR and expect to hand over trolley cases at the aircraft steps.

The meltemi delays and occasionally cancels the turboprops in July and August. Check the live board, and keep the ferry timetable as a fallback for the return.

An hour before departure is enough at this airport; it is one room, and you can see the aircraft arrive from the café.
