Kavala Airport “Megas Alexandros” (KVA) is on the plain of the Nestos delta at Chrysoupoli, 30 km east of Kavala and only 12 km from Keramoti, the ferry port for Thassos. That geography explains its traffic: most of its summer passengers never see Kavala at all and are on the Thassos boat within an hour of landing. Around 400,000 passengers a year, with the Athens flights running all year.

Fraport Greece renewed the terminal in 2021: one hall, arrivals and departures together, taxi rank and car park outside. It also serves Xanthi and Drama, each an hour away, and is the nearest airport to the Thracian border with Bulgaria.

Transport

Keramoti and the Thassos ferry are 12 km away, about €25 by taxi; Kavala is 30 km and about €45. There is no regular airport bus, so it is taxi, pre-booked transfer or hire car.

Parking

An open-air car park beside the terminal, from about €3 an hour or €10 a day. Kavala, Xanthi and Drama residents use it for the Athens flights, so it is busier around holidays than the summer traffic suggests.

Car rental

Rental desks are in the terminal with the cars beside it. A car goes to Thassos on the Keramoti ferry with the company’s permission, which is how most independent Thassos visitors travel; on the mainland the Egnatia motorway makes Kavala, Xanthi and Philippi easy.

Local tips

Thassos is closer to the airport than Kavala is: Keramoti quay is 15 minutes away and the ferry crosses in 40. Do not route via Kavala port unless your boat leaves from there.

The last Keramoti ferry in summer leaves in the late evening; an arrival after 21:00 should check the sailing before deciding between Thassos tonight and a hotel in Keramoti.

Sit on the left landing from the west for the Nestos delta and, on clear days, Thassos across the strait.

Kavala’s old town and harbour are a better wait for an evening flight than the terminal, but they are 30 minutes away; leave with time for the motorway.
