Alexandroupoli Airport “Dimokritos” (AXD) lies on the coast at Apalos, 7 km east of the city, between the Evros delta and the port. It is the easternmost airport in Greece, 40 km from the Turkish border at Kipoi, and a domestic airport above all: Aegean, Olympic and Sky Express connect Athens and, in season, Thessaloniki and Crete for the city, the university and the border region. Around 300,000 passengers a year.

The terminal is small and run by the Greek civil aviation authority: one hall, taxi rank and car park in front. Alexandroupoli town, the lighthouse promenade, the port for Samothrace and the railway station are all a quarter of an hour away.

The city and the port are 7 km away, about €12 by taxi or €1.20 on the city bus. The Samothrace ferry leaves from the port; the Turkish border at Kipoi is 45 minutes east, about €45 by taxi.

A car park in front of the terminal, from about €2 an hour or €8 a day, used by residents of the whole Evros region on the Athens flights; busiest around holidays.

Car rental

A few rental firms serve the terminal, with cars in front. The Evros region is spread out and its sights, the delta, the Dadia raptor forest, Soufli’s silk town, are only reachable by car; taking a hire car across the Turkish border is usually forbidden.

The Samothrace ferry leaves once or twice a day and mostly in the morning; from an evening flight, sleep in Alexandroupoli and sail tomorrow.

Istanbul is a five-hour drive or coach ride away via Kipoi; the KTEL runs daily coaches from the town station, and they are the sane way across, not a hire car.
